A Legacy at Davanni’s

Steve works at Minneapolis Davanni's Pizza for over 30 years.

For nearly 30 years, Steve has been a familiar and valued presence at Davanni’s Pizza & Hot Hoagies in Minneapolis. Supported through Reach’s Employment Services, Steve’s journey is a testament to dedication, community, and the power of meaningful work.

When asked what he likes about Reach, Steve is quick to answer: “They’re great. They’re great people.” Meeting new people and being part of a supportive environment has been a highlight for him. Over the years, Steve has worked closely with Marcus, a staff member from Reach, whom he describes simply as “awesome… cool guy.”

Steve’s daily routine at Davanni’s is a blend of reliability and hard work. “I get here at 8,” he explains. “I punch in… vacuum, mop, and then I do dishes. Sometimes I clean the mess outside, sometimes when it’s not very cold… the trash and all that.” He’s proud of his consistency and the variety of tasks he’s mastered, from using the dishwasher to keeping the restaurant tidy. “Now I know the task… where everything goes, all the dishes and stuff like that.”

Support from Reach has been crucial, especially when it comes to getting to work. Steve relies on Metro Mobility rides and coordination to ensure he arrives on time: “I come to work using Metro rides and I have to make sure they’re on time to come pick me up… sometimes they are early.” He appreciates the help he receives from colleagues and staff, mentioning, “Sometimes I have help… Lucy or Charles or people downstairs.”

Steve’s commitment to his job is clear, even if he’s modest about his achievements. When asked why he’s stayed so long, he says, “Because I like it.” He values the relationships he’s built, especially with the managers: “Yeah, I do [get along with the managers].” The work gives him purpose: “This keeps me busy. I stay out of trouble.”

Steve headed home from a day at work.

Reflecting on his early days, Steve admits, “It was hard to get a job… sending applications out and stuff.” He remembers feeling nervious when he first started: “First job is… Ohh, I was scared.” But the sense of accomplishment and belonging soon followed.

Steve encourages others to seek employment too. When talking about a friend who doesn’t have a job, his advice is, “Go get a job… There’s a lot of people who have jobs. Don’t sit at home.”

After so many years, Steve has become part of the Davanni’s family. He enjoys the food—“Yeah, the food here is good… I take slices of pizza home”—and has been celebrated for his 20 and 30 year milestones with generous appreciation gifts including a new watch.

As Reach celebrates 40 years as an organization, Steve reflects on their impact: “Yeah, it’s great. They have lots of nice people.” He’s grateful for the support that’s helped him maintain his job and independence for so long.

Steve’s story is one of perseverance, community, and the quiet pride that comes from a job well done. As he looks to the future, he jokes, “Another 30 years at Davanni’s? Not that long, I hope not. I’d be walking with the cane then,” but there’s no doubt that his legacy at Davanni’s, and with Reach, will last for years to come.
