Why I Believe in Reach: Patrick’s Story
In 2006, as an early-career attorney looking for opportunities to make a meaningful impact beyond my professional responsibilities, I didn’t know much about Reach for Resources or the field of disabilities. But I discovered Reach through MAPS for Nonprofits (now Propel Nonprofits), and it sparked my interest in getting involved.
I met with Mary Perkins, Reach’s Executive Director at the time and one of its founders. She was passionate, grounded, and clearly building something special. The more I learned, the more I realized this was a place where I could make a difference. So, I joined the board.
It didn’t take long to understand how essential Reach is. People don’t choose to have disabilities, yet they often face uphill battles with limited services, overlooked needs, and not enough support. Reach steps in where others do not. That’s why I made my first donation. It simply felt right.
Some of my favorite memories with Reach come from the Bowl-a-Thon and the Ghostly Gala. These events aren’t just fundraisers; they’re celebrations. You see people laughing, connecting, and feeling truly welcome. That is the magic of Reach. It creates joy and belonging.
I’m passionate about all of Reach’s programs, but a few stand out to me: employment services, in-home support, mental health, and recreation. Reach helps people find jobs, live independently, and feel seen not only for their challenges but also for their strengths. And the recreation programs are pure joy. They give people opportunities to socialize, learn, and simply have fun.
When I give to Reach, I hope to draw attention to something that deserves far more recognition. It is a well-run organization with a staff full of heart. They show up every day to make life better for the people they serve.
If someone asked me why they should donate, I would say this: no matter your politics or background, Reach is something everyone can stand behind. Disabilities are not a choice, and government support only goes so far. Every dollar truly makes a difference.
I wish more people could see what I have seen over nearly 20 years on the board of directors. Reach is doing incredible work. Trust me, it is changing lives every single day.
