A Heart for Helping: Melissa and Kathy

Melissa and Kathy Stangi Reach for Resources volunteer.

Melissa and her mother Kathy are a dynamic duo whose dedication and teamwork have become a valued part of Reach’s volunteer community. Their journey into volunteering began with a shared desire to stay active, give back, and support causes that matter to them. For Melissa, volunteering offers a way to stay engaged, build skills, and contribute meaningfully while exploring future employment opportunities. For Kathy, it’s a continuation of a lifelong commitment to service—even in retirement.

Their connection to Reach runs deep. Melissa has participated in Reach program since she was young, from adaptive recreation and bingo nights to the annual Ghostly Gala – where she won best partner costume last year. Now, she and Kathy give back by helping with essential office tasks like shredding, scanning, and preparing mailings. Their Friday morning volunteer shifts are filled with purpose, laughter, and a sense of accomplishment.

Beyond Reach, Kathy and Melissa also volunteer with Can Do Canines and Moments Hospice, assisting with reception and preparing care materials. Kathy’s impact extends even further through the parent support nonprofit she has managed for the past 28 years for families affected by organic acidemia, a rare metabolic disorder. Through this group, she organizes conferences, fundraisers, and mailings to support research and connect families navigating similar journeys. Her advocacy work is a powerful example of how personal experience can fuel lasting change.

Together, Melissa and Kathy embody the spirit of service. Their advice to others? “Just try it. There’s something for everyone.” Whether it’s helping an office run smoothly or supporting families across the country, they show that volunteering can be both deeply personal and widely impactful.
